St Petersburg City Square

If you visit Russia, St Petersburg is a city not to miss. The Palace Square of St. Petersburg is one of the best places to visit in the city. Many wonderful architectural monuments are located in the Palace Square. Palace Square is also the place, where many historical events took place, among them the Bloody Sunday of 1905 and the Great October Revolution in 1917.The Square links up Nevsky prospect with the Palace Bridge and Vasilyevsky Island.

Baroque Winter Palace of Russian Tsars is located in the northern side of the Palace Square. Winter Palace is one of the most beautiful buildings in the whole city. Nowadays it is a part of State Hermitage Museum.

The southern part of the Palace Square is occupied be the building of former Imperial Army general Staff. It is designed in white and yellow colors. The building was built in the 19th century, in the period from 1819 and 1829. Italian architect Carlo Rossi was the chief architect of the building. The central arch of this building is designed as a Triumphal arch, which will take you to the Nevsky prospect.

The western part of the Palace Square is occupied by the Admiralty and Admiralty Garden. From this place tourists have an opportunity to see the domes of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. There are plenty of St Petersburg tours that will take you to all of the city’s best places.

The Alexander Column stands in the very center of the Palace Square. The Alexander Column was built in the 19th century, from 1830 and 1834. The red granite column is the tallest in the world.

The museum of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts is located in the historical building of the Academy of Fine Arts. The museum has been displaying works of art since 1757. Many exhibitions are held in the museum, including final examination works of students.

The museum of Urban Sculpture is located on the grounds of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The museum displays monumental sculpture and tombstones. Many prominent people of Russia were buried in the Lavra’s Necropolis.

Places to see in St. Petersburg

Every Russia travel tour must include St Petersburg. St. Petersburg has been the capital of Russia during the time of Russia tsars. It was and still remained one of the most developed cities in the world. There are many places of interest in St.Petersburg, so you’ll never get bored spending a perfect Russia vacation there.

There are many hotels in St. Petersburg that have modern conveniences for a good and comfortable rest. The “Brothers Karamazov” hotel is situated only in a kilometer from the center, so it gives an opportunity to see the best sights there. Guarded parking is available in many St Petersburg hotels too. There is also a business center there that is available 24 hours a day.

The major historical attraction in St.Petersburg is Peter and Paul Fortress, which was constructed in the period from 1712 to 1733. This fortress played a very important role in the history of Russia. Peter the Great was the founder of the Peter and Paul fortress. From 1721 the fortress has become the garrison of St.Petersburg, as well as high security prison. Some pats of the prison are still open for the visitors.

If you want to find yourself in the time of Russian tsars, then you must visit Peter’s House, which belonged to the tsar Peter the Great. Peter’s house has been carefully preserved, so there you can find original things belonging to the tsar.

St. Petersburg the “cultural capital” of Russia

St. Petersburg is considered by many as the “cultural capital” of Russia, because the main cultural life of the country is concentrated there. The center of St. Petersburg lies on the South bank of the river Neva, which is nit the only rive flowing through the city. In fact, this allows you to take a Russia cruise and enter the city from the water.

There are many sights and historical monuments in the city that are really magnificent. Most of them are located on or around Nevsky prospect. The best sights are –the Hermitage, the Russian museum, the Mikhail Castle, the St. Isaac and Kazan cathedrals.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral is a magnificent construction that is seen from different streets of St. Petersburg. It was built in the 19-th century by an architect Auguste Montferrand. It remained the main Russian church until 1922. St. Isaac’s Cathedral is really magnificent.

On your St Petersburg travel you’ll surely come across the statue of the Bronze Horseman, which is dedicated to the founder of the city, tsar Peter the Great. It was created by a French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet. It was Catherine the Great that ordered to create this huge and magnificent monument.

St. Petersburg is one of the richest capitals in Europe. It offers perfect accommodations for spending unforgettable holiday. My travel to St Petersburg last summer was terrific when I went i went on one of the tours to St Petersburg.

Getting around in St Petersburg

St. Petersburg is a well developed city. Nowadays it has transportation system that includes buses, street cars, and trolleybuses as well as Metro system. Getting around the city is easy and even enhances your St Petersburg travel experience.

Above-ground transportation operates from 6.00 to 24.00. The fare in the buses and trolleybuses is collected through the sale of special tickets that can be bought from conductors in the vehicle. Charter taxis that include mini-buses circulate along all the main routes.

Taxis are easily recognized as they have either letter “T” on the car door or the sign “taxi” on the roof, which is usually flashing. There are many taxi-parks in St. Petersburg, so you can order any car and it will always be at you disposal.

If you want you can always rent a car in St. Petersburg. There are several rent-a- car services in the city, which accept all kinds of credit cards. You can rent any kind of car with or without a driver.

St. Petersburg has a well –developed metro system, which includes 56 underground stations with 4 lines. The Metro operates from 5.45 to 24.00. Fair is paid by special tokens or by magnetic cards that are sold at all Metro stations. The tokens sold there can be also used for local calls on some city’s pay-phones.

All tourists must remember that the largest bridges in St. Petersburg are lifted at night. So make sure that you are on the same bank of Neva as your St Petersburg hotel. If you came on Russia cruise, please also make sure that it is docked to the same bank where you are.

St. Petersburg- the greatest city of Russia

St. Petersburg is considered one of the greatest cities in Russia. It is economical, cultural and scientific center of the whole country. The city was founded by Russian tsar Peter the Great in the 18-th century.

St.Petersburg is very famous among the tourists that visit this great city very often. During many centuries St. Petersburg remained the center of historical events that affected future generations.

Being an old city St.Petersburg gathered numerous kinds of historical monuments that preserved till today. St. Petersburg is referred to as an open-air museum, because you can see monuments, belonging to different epochs on every step in the city.

St. Petersburg is called “Venice of the North” as there are many rivers flowing through the city. St. Petersburg has forty two islands that are divided from each other by numerous rivers. The city is only few feet above the sea level.

I recommend you to travel to Moscow first for few days and then go to St Petersburg. Moscow is a must see, but Moscow hotels can be really expensive. I also recommend taking one of Russian river cruises from Moscow to St Petersburg.

Many museums and Art Galleries are situated in St.Petersburg, so those tourists that are fond of art can find a lot of interesting places to visit. One of the oldest museums is the State Hermitage Museum that has a worldwide fame.

You’ll never be sorry for visiting this great city that is really magnificent.
